Drone Flight School

While ONdronecamp is mainly focused on providing an awesome drone-focused camp experience for youths, we are also a Drone Flight School for all ages, too! We can get you started on your future in drone aviation, whether it will be just a hobby, or a future career path!

Our Drone Flight School is conveniently located in Hamilton (Dundas) Ontario, and is easily accessible from Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph, Burlington, Brantford, Stoney Creek and Niagara.

We offer 1-day basic and 2.5-day advanced ground schools for those interested in pursuing their Basic and Advanced pilot certificate from Transport Canada. These certificates are required to operate drones in the 250 g to 25 kg (small RPAS) weight category in Canada. Our curriculum is based on the aviation publication Knowledge Requirements for Pilots of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems 250 g up to and including 25 kg, Operating within Visual Line-of-Sight(VLOS) – TP 15263 published by Transport Canada.

In addition to Basic and Advanced ground schools, we also offer Flight Reviews and Flight Review Prep courses at our 2,525 m2 flight operations area, and have modern DJI drones available for use if you do not have your own. Please note we are located within the CYHM Class D controlled airspace, and small RPAS operations require airspace clearance from Nav Canada.

Courses are delivered by our Program Director and Chief Flight Instructor, Ray Morrell, an Advanced small remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) pilot who holds a Flight Reviewer rating and who has over 5 years’ drone aviation experience, and over twenty years’ experience in adult education program delivery. All in-class training is delivered at our classroom at the Glenwood Education Centre in Dundas, Ontario.

Length: 8 hours (1 day)

The material will prepare you for the Basic exam from Transport Canada, and includes in-class lectures and interactive exercises, as well as take-home study materials.

Basic operations permit pilots of small RPAS to operate in uncontrolled airspace and at least 30 m away from persons who are not involved in the operation. This level of certificate is suitable for most recreational or hobby drone users.

Note: You must be at least 14 years of age to write the Transport Canada small Basic RPAS pilot exam.

Length: 20 hours (2.5 days)

Prerequisite: Basic small RPAS pilot certificate

This course provides more in-depth training that will prepare small Basic RPAS pilots for the Advanced exam from Transport Canada, and includes in-class lectures, interactive exercises, scenario-based exercises, and take-home study materials.

Advanced operations involve any small RPAS flights within controlled airspace, near people, and is also usually required for any operations requiring a Special Flight Operations Certificate – RPAS such as flying over 400 feet (122 m) above the ground, at advertised events, and other high-risk operations. This level of certificate is required for most commercial drone use.

Note: You must be at least 16 years of age to write the Transport Canada small Advances RPAS pilot exam, and you must successfully complete an in-person Flight Review by an authorized flight reviewer (separately from this course) to obtain certification.

Length: 3 hours

Prerequisite: Basic small RPAS pilot certificate

This course prepares you for taking the Flight Review from an flight reviewer. You will go through all of the steps and procedures involved in a flight review and conduct a practice flight lasting a minimum of 15 minutes.

We will also provide you with a Study Guide to assist you in preparing for your actual Flight Review.

Length: 1-2 hours
